Why IE6 will be around for a while yet
TechCrunch reports that YouTube has started prompting IE6 users to upgrade to a "more modern browser" like Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3.5 or their own Chrome browser.
Changing the default number of recent blog entries in Drupal
Drupal has a built in 'Recent Blog Posts' module which display the latest 10 blog posts in any content slot that you select, whilst this built in functionality is useful, there isn't a way to customise it. It's quite likely that people won't want the last ten blog entries, or they might want the dates or maybe even a sub section of the story.
Drupal Wysiwyg inline editor and easy image uploader
Drupal is great for it's easy customisation and extendable nature, but there are some features that you need straight out of the box that Drupal lacks.
You'll probably have spotted the lack of a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor in the default install. This can be fixed quickly with the Wysiwyg module which offers you options to download and install several different inline editors.
Open Text Acquires Vignette
It seems Open Text's penchant for acquiring vendors of content management systems continues at full speed, the latest Vignette
What this means for Red Dot is yet to be made clear, but if Open Texts recent track history of acquisitions (Obtree & Gauss) is anything to go by then don't be surprised if Vignette becomes the new Open Text WCM of choice.
LiveLink WCM (Obtree) road map update
Open Text recently released the latest roadmap for LiveLink WCM Presentation Server (or Obtree for short..)
Although the information given in these roadmaps is more of a rough guide than the de-facto plan, it'll be reassuring to customers to see Open Text planning point releases into 2011 and offering support for Windows 64-bit with the release of 9.8.2 in November 2009.
First look at Alfresco Labs 3.0
As the slow but inevitable move from Obtree C4 / LiveLink WCM PS continues, I've started to look around at other technologies that I can get into.
Open Source has been a bit of a dirty word in UK local authorities for years, and whilst the private sector has been a bit more forward thinking, it still drags way behind Microsoft solutions.
Google reliance?
Google's under fire today for it's weekend gaff which declared every website on the web as potentially unsafe and malicious.
In an unusual slip of professionalism from Google, someone, somewhere at the search giant managed to mark every website as dangerous, rather than a select few. Whilst inconvenient for people (myself included) I managed to navigate to www.live.com and search from there instead, and I'd presumed that's likely what everyone else did, end of story?
The frustration of web page testing
Back in the mid to late 1990's when I first started dabbling with web sites, there was always a problem making your website look the same across different browsers. Dynamic elements of sites caused particular problems and I remember at least one site where I had to have two separate version's of the same page just to make it look presentable.
2009 - The year mobile internet internet gets big?
We've been busy preparing a refreshed look for UIME throughout January, the main aim of this was to make the website easier to use and allow us to expand the content on there whilst unifying the look with our new mobile website (more on that next month)
Cloud computing - the future? Or dot.com v2?
Gartner reports that the IT industry is at risk of a crash much akin to the dot.com meltdown, with start-ups jumping onto the cloud computing bandwagon.
