First look at Alfresco Labs 3.0
As the slow but inevitable move from Obtree C4 / LiveLink WCM PS continues, I've started to look around at other technologies that I can get into.
Open Source has been a bit of a dirty word in UK local authorities for years, and whilst the private sector has been a bit more forward thinking, it still drags way behind Microsoft solutions.
Most of the open source content management solutions don't really offer a good replacement for LiveLink WCM - or at least out of the box. Things like LDAP, Workflow, User Profiling, can be added to systems like Drupal and Joomla!, I've been looking for something that has all of this + some document repository functionality out of the box, the headache of installing loads of plugins and getting them all to work and then having confidence that the system will withstand heavy loads presents more headaches.
I've started to take some serious interest in Alfresco for Enterprise level use, it's relatively platform agnostic, and took about 5 minutes to get up and running on my Macbook. There's support offered by Alfresco, which might prove to be a good selling point for customers still wary of open source. I'm currently having some issues getting the WCM virtulisation server to run, but the document repository side of things looks very impressive.
